Professional Development

Career Goals

My long-term professional goal is to progress toward Nurse Practitioner practice in Australia by first achieving AHPRA registration, gaining advanced Registered Nurse experience in critical or acute care, completing relevant postgraduate education, and developing the clinical leadership and advanced practice competencies required for this career pathway within the next five to seven years

SMART Goal Framework

Research has continued to use SMART goal-setting approaches to support behavioural change and help individuals develop realistic and organised action plans (Takahashi et al., 2019; White et al., 2020). White et al. (2020) discuss how structured SMART-style goals can help transform broad intentions into clear and practical action plans — having a goal alone may not be enough; the goal should also include realistic actions that can be monitored and adjusted as progress is made.

Short-Term Goal

Timeframe: Six months

Over the next six months, my short-term goal is to become more confident, organised and independent in my studies and practical learning. I want to strengthen my knowledge while also improving how I manage my responsibilities, respond to feedback and apply what I have learned in practical situations.

To achieve this goal, I will dedicate at least three hours each week to reviewing course materials, preparing for assessments and practising important skills. I will also aim to submit all assessments by their due dates and seek feedback from my teacher, trainer or supervisor at least once every month.

Specific

Focusing on improving knowledge, confidence, organisation and practical skills.

Measurable

Tracking weekly study hours, completed assessments, feedback received and academic progress.

Achievable

These activities can realistically fit into my current study routine.

Relevant

These improvements will support my education and prepare me for my future career.

Time-bound

Noticeable progress demonstrated within six months.

My achievement will not only be reflected in my results but also in the way I approach my learning — completing tasks more independently, managing deadlines effectively and applying feedback to improve my work. Research involving SMART goals has shown that setting clear and measurable goals can provide a useful structure for monitoring behavioural and personal change (Takahashi et al., 2019).

Long-Term Goal

Timeframe: Three to five years

My long-term goal is to successfully complete my qualification and develop into a confident and capable professional within the next three to five years. Rather than viewing graduation as the end of my learning, I want it to become the beginning of my professional growth.

After completing my qualification, I plan to gain employment in my chosen field and continue building my skills through practical experience, workplace feedback and professional development. I will aim to complete at least one professional development activity each year, such as additional training, workshops or relevant educational opportunities.

Specific

Completing my qualification, gaining employment and continuing professional development.

Measurable

Evaluated through completed assessments, graduation, employment and further training milestones.

Achievable

Working towards each milestone gradually within a realistic timeframe.

Relevant

Directly relates to my future career and ongoing professional development as a nurse.

Time-bound

All outcomes achieved within three to five years.

Achieving this long-term goal will demonstrate both growth and accomplishment. Completing my qualification will show academic achievement, while gaining employment will demonstrate my ability to apply what I have learned in a professional environment. Continuing to participate in professional development will show that I am committed to improving my knowledge and skills over time.

How These Goals Connect

My short-term and long-term goals are deeply connected. The organisation, confidence, independence and knowledge I develop during the next six months will provide a foundation for completing my qualification and becoming a successful professional. By regularly reviewing my progress, I will be able to recognise my achievements, identify areas for improvement and continue working towards my future goals.
